10,000 MISS SCHOOL IN BUSIA

Busia district located in the eastern part of Uganda, is currently facing a problem of teacher’s sit-down strike that has been commencing for a fortnight now.

Teachers from the 13 secondary government schools in Busia district claim that they haven’t been paid since February and no response from those in charge of ensuring they are paid the District Education officer(DEO) and chief Administrative Officer (CAO)
Teachers decided to strike at the beginning of this second term after failure of mediation with their superiors, they affirm that they can’t teach students while facing lots of challenges that come without being paid . They vow not to go back to class unless they are paid.


In a fight of two elephants , the grass suffers . In this situation the students have fallen victims over 10,000 students in these schools have are attending school without teachers for two weeks and students. In Busia College and Bukhalika secondary school, two of the affected 13secondary school have resorted to forming discussion groups to do self revision as they hope for their mentors to be paid and they return to class as soon as popossible,specially the candidates and students under the new lower secondary school curriculum that need regular assessment.


Seeking clarity from the authorities, Mr.Deo Mukiibi, the DEO of Busia district confirms that there are teachers who are unpaid since February and attributes the delay of payment to government’s pay increment to science teachers which made it difficult for the district to divide funds equally amongst all the teachers until the next financial year. He adds that they had to pay teachers partially for each to atleast get a token as they push for a supplementary form the Ministry of Finance Planning and Economic Development.


Mukiibi assured teachers that the supplementary budget was passes and funds have come and by the end of this quarter of the financial, all the 128 teachers will receive their pending salaries for March, April, May and June before the financial year. He urged teachers in all the 13 government schools to stay calm and return to classes as the issue gets solved.
