It is crunch time for the Uganda National Boxing team. The contingent that comprises of 17 robust men and women were officially flagged off to Yaounde on Monday at Kawaala slums. The games are to commence on Tuesday.
Majority of the members are rookies though. But this does not fray captain Joshua Tukamuhebwa who said they have been working absolutely hard enough under the stewardship of experienced teammates and coaches to improve their performances. The six female boxers are led by Emily Nakalema – who thanked the team for picking up women and is relishing the opportunity to fight for medals.

Fan favourite Ukasha Matovu also known as Morocco was on song as he continues to capture their imaginations. This prodigy was given that name after his heroics at the 2018 Africa Youth Boxing Championships in Casablanca that saw him reach the quarter finals. He thanked his fans and assumed responsibility for the team’s success – for it may lie in his gloves.
Meanwhile, Uganda Boxing Federation boss, Moses Muhangi who officially flagged off the squad said that he is hopeful the medals will come home despite a shortened preparation at the team’s camp at Forest Park in Buloba. And team coach Twaib Mayanya could not be more confident when he promised to bring back at least 17 medals.
Gold medalists are set to bag $20,000 (Shs74m) apiece while silver medalists are to take $10,000 (Shs37m) and $5,000 (Shs18.5m) is awarded to a bronze medalist.
Uganda looks to better their preceding outing last year in Mozambique, where they scooped only two bronze medals – where they finished joint 15th with Guinea. The tourney is a preamble for September’s Africa Olympics qualifiers to be held in Dakar, Senegal.
