The Electoral commission launched its 2026 general elections road map at Hotel African, Rt.Hon. Robinah Nabbanja
Uganda’s premier was the guest of honour. Among other stakeholders in attendance were members of civil society, representatives of different political parties and members of government. Hon.Nobert Mao the minister for justice and Constitutional Affairs and the president general for the Democratic Party was also in attendance.
The rolled out road map will run from 3rd April 2024 to 9th February 2026. From 3rd April to 1st June 2024 procurement of materials to be used in voting will be processed. The commission will verify polling stations from 4th July to 13th July 2024, the next task for the commission will come on 18th April to 8th May 2025 and this will be posting updated voters registers .

The road map highlights deadline for submission of academic qualifications for different offices in the country. Those standing for presidential office are expected to submit their academic credentials by 1st August 2025, those who want to contest for parliamentary seats must submit their academic papers by 16th August 2023 and candidates for local government posts are expected to finalize submission of academic qualifications to the electoral commission by 3rd July 2023.
Screening of candidates at presidential, parliamentary and local government positions is also highlighted in the road map. Screening for presidential candidates shall take place from 2nd to 3rdOctober 2023, local government candidates from 3rd to 12th September 2025 and parliamentary candidates from 16th to 17th September 2025 .
The road map shall be climaxed by the general elections of Presidential, parliamentary and local government elections from 12th January and 9th February 2026. The Electoral Commission justified its early roll out of the road map to prior planning and allowing government to provide the funds needed for the execution of the road map which is 1.386 trillion.
“It’s a good move by the electoral commission and we as government , this is going to give us enough time to plan on how much money to give to electoral commission in the financial years until the elections. I as the leader of government business ,I assure electoral commission that we are going to see them get the needed funds.” said Rt.Hon. Robinah Nabbanja Uganda’s premier on the issue of government giving electoral commission funds in time.
It’s at this launch, that Hon.Nobert Mao the minister for justice and Constitutional Affairs petitioned the prime Minister on electrol reforms. In his submission, the legal Don reminded Nabbanja that its high time she leads the way for them to take this to cabinet and then parliament to enable the reforms happen before the 2026 general elections as Ugandans are waiting for them.
