Former UNEB Executive Secretary Passes On.

Bukenya Mathew, aged 89 has died on 21 July, 2023 after battling health issues at Rubaga Hospital.
Jennifer Kalule the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) confirmed his death on 22 July. she appreciated the late Bukenya’s selfless efforts towards the education sector, amidst the challenges faced by the board.
“He has rested. His legacy is marked by the great strides he made for our nation during his years at the examination body, overcoming numerous challenges along the way.” Kalule said.
Bukenya is the longest serving executive secretary of the board. He embarked on this leadership journey in 1997 till 2016 he retired. He had served at UNEB as an accountant but later was called upon by President Yoweri Museveni. He succeeded David Livingstone.
During Bukenya’s time in office, curbing rampant malpractice at national level was his main achievement which restored the board’s credibility. Ranking best performing schools at the national level was dismissed to avoid competition.
Culprit examiners under malpractice were on tenterhooks after Bukenya strategized to have their names cancelled and shortlisted as one of the ways to curb malpractice. This reduced the vice since examiners were mindful to protect their reputation.
As he approached his resignation, he had disputes with Fagil Monday a retired educationalist
Dan Nokorach Odong took on the role of Executive Director UNEB after Bukenya’s retirement which changed the title from Executive Secretary.
