Masaza cup defending champions Busiro suffer stunning defeat in nail-biting soccer showdown at Muteesa ll stadium Wankulukuku, home for Express FC.
Yesterday on 24th June 2023, marked the beginning of Mazasa cup competition season 23/24. The opening match was held at Muteesa 11 stadium Wankulukuku, Wakiso district under the theme Men lead the fight Against HIV/ AIDS to Save The Girl Child. Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi the king of Buganda was the chief guest accompanied by the Katikiro Charles Peter Mayinga and other delegates from the central and Mengo government.
In a shocking turn of events, the reigning onetime Masaza cup champions Busiro with their new coaching stuff headed by Ibrahim Kirya and his assistant Godfrey Wassawa who replaced Simon Peter Mugerwa, who also joined Buddu FC, were dethroned yesterday in a thrilling match that left fans on the edge of their seats. Despite their tittle winning pedigree, the defending champions were unable to maintain their supremacy at Wankulukuku. Busiro was humiliated by the three times Masaza cup winners Mawokota in 3-1 loose under coach Richard Malinga former Uganda Cranes International.
Mawokota recovered from a goal down to overcome Busiro 3-1. Busiro’s only goal was scored by Akram Muzanyi which was a penalty and he also missed another penalty. Aubaker Myanja, John Innocent Kisolo and Calvin Peter Emayo found the goals for Mawokota.
Busiro is in group one which is Muganzilwaza group where its in with Ggomba, Mawokota, Ssese, Mawogola and Kabula and the second group has Buddu, Buwekula, Kyagwe, Kyadondo, Buluuli and Kkooki whereas the last group has Ssingo, Bulemezi, Butambala, Buvuma, Bugerere and Busujju. Therefore, the second match will take place on 1st July 2023 and it will be between Buvuma and Butambala.
The defeat serves a stark reminder that in Masaza cup competition no Masaza team has ever defended the title back to back.
