HOAX CALLS A TOP CATALYST FOR ONLINE FRAUD

We’ve all at some point got this phone call

Hoax calls contribute 95% to online fraud in Uganda. Majority of the Ugandans have had the taste of the fraudsters who call from different numbers, it’s has come to the attention of the UCC and security investigation many of the people receiving the hoax calls are users of the MTN network.

It’s the fraud that has prompted UCC and telecom companies through different media to launch campaigns like Beera steady , Tonfera campaign where they are calling upon telephone users not to give any one authorisation to their pins.


In this campaign, UCC continues to tell phone users that even when , one loses their phone they should first call the call center to block their numbers from access, then proceed to seeking police intervention. In this same campaign running frequently at next media services Stations Sanyuka Tv, NBS TV , NXT readio, and Salam Tv.


“We are calling from UCC and MTN, enter you pin to avoid it from being changed or cut off.” This is one of the punchlines dropped by fraudsters during these hoax calls. Once one acts to the guidelines of the hoax call , they definitely fall prey to the conmen of this country.In a campaign to fight this vice UCC is conducting public lectures dubbed “UCC YANGE “, aimed to harness the relationship of the public and UCC to add to the ongoing campaigns like Tonfeera, Beera steady Be better.


Despite the efforts by UCC, Bank of Uganda ,MTN and the other partners, Fraudsters are also not seated today the Ministry of Justice and constitutional Affairs has released a presser where it notifies the public not to give any money to anyone who calls them using the name of the Attorney general with the aim of fleecing funds in disguise of giving individuals appointment letters to work in the Attorney general’s chambers.

The presser identified the fraudster as Muhiire Ernest and the number used is 0762954973 The communications officer of the Ministry of Justice and constitutional Affairs Simon Peter Jemba,advised the public to be very vigilant of unknown calls. And clarified that these kind of interviews are done by the public service commission and the ministry only receives minutes of the interview and the due process is free. And in case of any suspicious call, please call 0781968340 and report to police.
