UGANDA PIPPED BY ALGERIA IN AFCON QUALIFIER

It doesn’t get any worse for the Uganda Cranes after falling to a 2-1 setback from what was a must win game against their North African opponents (Algeria) in the African Cup of Nations Qualifiers. The match took place at Japoma stadium, Cameroon with Uganda’s main ground Namboole stadium still under refurbishment. Tanzania’s 1-0 victory over Niger earlier had piled more pressure on Micho” and his men. The Serbian fielded a team with vast experience led by veteran Emmanuel Okwir.

Okwir and company got off to an intrepid start creating a few good chances and even registered a few attempts, until disaster struck when Algerian forward El Amine Amoura scored from a shot ricocheted from goal keeper Magoola Salim’s hands. Perhaps he could have done better. Halftime lingered as the Cranes battled for their lives.

After the break, the desert foxes managed to duly keep Micho’s men at bay before hurling a sucker punch with a second goal in the 67th minute. Amoura was at it again, this time flicking a header from close range past hapless Salim. His brace puts him on three goals, only behind Napoli’s starlet Victor Osihmen and Senegal’s Mane who have bagged seven and five respectively. Substitute Fahad Bayo’s late strike offered a flicker of hope but merely proved a consolation in the end.

50:50 position as Uganda looses to Algeria

The defeat means the Cranes must beat Niger in their final fixture and hope Algeria does them a favour too by beating Tanzania, if they are to have any chance of qualify for the finals. And also goal difference could decide who might head to Cameroon next year. The high stakes final round of matches will occur on 4th September this year.
