Uganda’s She Cranes brushed aside Trinidad & Tobago in the last game of the preliminary round of the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town yesterday. In a match up that finished 73-33, centre court maestro Baagala Margret and company were simply dominant. This meant that the She Cranes qualified for the second round in consecutive World Cup finals, having also done so in 2019.
The first quarter got quite close. She Cranes took the lead albeit an early scare, and remained on top with a three-goal cushion. Eyaru and Namulumba ruptured the defence of their opponents with five and nine goals respectively.

A spirited comeback attempt by Trinidad & Tobago in the second quarter was nullified by an equally resolute display by these Ugandan ladies. They still led the She Calypsos by 33-27 at the end of the quarter. Substitute Mary Nuba had propelled Mugerwa’s side with her 11 conversions from 12 attempts.

Victory became seemingly doubtless after third session where, in the end, the scoreline stood at 54-27. Nuba yet again stole the show, chipping in with 18 points. Baagala could be mentioned as the shinning light of Uganda to that point, racking her 30th assist by the end of this segment.
By the end of the fourth segment, She Cranes had prevailed 74-34, thanks to some nimble passing by Baagala, imposing presence of Hannisha Mohammed at the back coupled with Nuba’s shooting prowess and Eyaru’s invaluable all round efforts. Not to mention their collective firm stance in their pursuit for glory.
And now Uganda, NewZealand, Trinidad &Tobago conjoin Jamaica, South Africa to form group G in phase two of the preliminaries. Could the ladies from Uganda go all the way on end?
