‘A storm is brewing’ as the 2023 Nile special sevens rugby tournament is set to return this weekend, on the 1st and 2nd July. The first circuit games Kick off at the home of reigning champions Jinja Hippos, Dam waters in Jinja City. Eleven core teams among which include the heathens shall be joined by five other invited teams from the regions.
“As the number one fan of Uganda’s rugby sport, we are working to ensure that every circuit comes with a different vibe and unmatched matchday experience.” Said William Akankwasa, the area sales manager (Nile Special) during the press briefing on Tuesday.
The management has conceived a new venue in Kitgum Bomah ground, which will host the games on 8th and 9th July, while Rujumba shall welcome the teams on 22nd and 23rd July to Kings Park. Buhinga stadium will then pay homage to the games on 29th and 30th July where Toroo lions are likely to feature.
The frenzy will continue in August at Kyadondo rugby grounds and new hosts Tororo rugby club. This year’s season concludes at Bugembe stadium in Jinja on 2nd and 3rd September.
Uganda’s rugby sport is ever growing and this year sees the ladies’ teams etched to the fold for the very first time.This will be a first of its kind,” said Uganda Rugby Union chief executive Isaac Lutwama.
“It’s consistent with the union’s strategy to grow the women’s game. We shall tap into the same fans that have always watched rugby, to promote the women and people will begin to appreciate what they also bring to the table. Soon they, too, will become household names.” He added.
Several women’s teams that include champions Black Pearls, Avengers and Nile Rapids are in contention to tussle for the ultimate prize. Who will emerge victorious?
