No Justification for Terrorism

By Carol Muwonge

All children have the right to education in a safe environment free of violence and harassment.
Beyond the direct risk of violence and exploitation faced by students and teachers, attacks on schools like the one that happened at Lhubiriha Secondary School have a devastating impact on the right to education of children.

At least 42 people, mostly students, were killed on June 16, during a late-night raid on the Lhubiriha secondary school dormitory in Mpondwe, Uganda close to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Victims were hacked shot and burned. Some students believed to have been kidnapped are still missing. The attack has been attributed to the militant rebel group Allied Democratic Forces.

We mourn with the families and community impacted by this devastating act of violence and strongly condemn the horrific attack on Lhubiriha secondary School. There is no vindication for terrorism, more so on innocent school children. The authorities must act to prevent such attacks on schools, to protect the lives of children and to ensure their right to education in a safe environment.
