SHE CRANES OVERWHELM BARBADOS IN FRIENDLY MATCH

BY RAPHEAL LUBANGAKENE

The Uganda national netball side (She Cranes) produced a stellar performance against Barbados in the first of their exhibition games ahead of the World Cup finals, wherein they leaped to a 53-33 victory. The match took place at Cape Town International Convention Centre on Sunday 23rd. The team also included Lightning Loughborough star Mary Nuba, who had joined the rest of the members in Cape Town. The team that had 14 players and a handful of officials had arrived in South Africa on Saturday 22nd.

The mood in the camp was somewhat sunny and expectant, with head coach Fred Mugerwa pointing out Nuba’s availability as a huge boost to the team’s chances at the finals. While his assistant Sarah Namuddu lauded the ladies’ performance – also adding that it was a measure of the player’s aptness.
“The team had a good game against Barbados. We tested all players. But let’s wait until after first game on Friday to determine our direction,” Namuddu said after the encounter.

A meeting with Scotland is next up on Tuesday, which Namuddu hinted shall determine who could make it to the ultimate squad for the crunch World Cup fixture against Singapore on Friday 28th. Mubiru’s girls will then face defending champions on Saturday 29th before rounding up the preliminary stage against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday 30th.
Inspirational captain Irene Eyaru earlier this month said that this team is even better than the heroines of 2019 who finished seventh at the 2019 World Cup. Shooter Nuba and Stella Nanfuka are the only survivors of that lot. Results and performances shall do tell.

It is the fourth appearance of Uganda at the World Cup finals, after featuring in 1979, 2015 and most recently in 2019. The current batch is looking more spirited than ever, gunning for atleast a medals position. Each member of this squad was promised Shs10m by State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang before leaving home for South Africa.

It is indeed a testing time but also a perfect time to lay Uganda’s netball potentiality to the World.
