Uganda and Denmark have had a camaraderie and been allies on so many projects overtime. Projects like Municipal funding 2013,empowering disabilities, funding refugee programs, promoting of governance and civil rights among others. The Danish government is a big time investment partner in Uganda its last phase of investment in Uganda 2018-2022 was 127million Euros.
Uganda’s ties with Denmark come along way since 1 April 1968. It was a walk in the park for the Kampala and Copenhagen based governments, until 2014 when Uganda’s August house passed the Uganda Anti-homosexuality Act, 2014. The relationship is in turmoil as the Danish government strikes away 6.72million Euros of Danish subsidies from the central government to civil Organizations and intends to recompense 41.618million Euros more.

The episode was petrifying to the diplomatic ties between the two countries, however the waves managed to calm down in no time. This calm after the storm didn’t not last long due to the 2014 phobia and the Democratic Governance Facility ventures put to hold by the NGO bureau with instruction from the Ugandan government.

Not a year later, the seeking of a checkmate under disguise of diplomatic technical issues recur, with the Danish Embassy giving orders to stop receiving all Ugandan Travellers with polycarbonate e-passports. On 30 March 2023 , Ugandan government unveiled polycarbonate e-passports with notion to ease verification, persecute travel documentation fraud and comfort travel experiences for Ugandans.
All this doesn’t make matters right to the Danish Embassy as many Ugandans from mid June till today have been denied visas to Denmark in quest for validation and verification process from competent Danish Authorities. Until they press the greenlights button, No Ugandan possessing a polycarbonate e-passport will be granted a visa to Denmark according to the Danish Ambassador signe Winding Albjerg.

This has put the Uganda government in a crisis, that they can only solve with go a head of the Danish. However in a presser today, Simon Mundeyi spokesperson of ministry of Internal Affairs assured Ugandans, “We are aware of the situation, we are engaging with the Danish government to resolve this crisis and we ask for a week more to mediate with the Danish and by next week our people can access visas and travel.”
