United Nations Education, Scientific and cultural Organization (UNESCO ), is the specialized agency of the United Nations in charge of promoting world peace and security through international cooperation in education, arts, science and cultures and its been in existence since 16 November , 1945.
UNESCO red marked Kasubi Tombs on the list of endangered cultural heritage sites after the 2010 conflagration that left the Tombs in a devastated state.
Kasubi Tombs is one of the 31 royal Tombs in Buganda since inception of the kingdom in the 13 century , it was declared official royal burial ground in 1884. It’s situated at Kasubi Hill in Rubaga division Kampala and occupies 64arces of land , Kasubi Tombs was declared a UNESCO cultural heritage site in 2001.

The good news comes shortly after Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II king of Buganda had earlier requested UNESCO to review the matter and get Kasubi Tombs off the endangered heritage sites list because Buganda is doing all the possible and the site is no longer a threat and asked for the matter to be looked at during the upcoming Saudi Arabia convention , which was only upcoming at the time.
“We are very happy for the clearance, it comes at a good time when we are left with about nine months to complete the construction works at the Masiro, we want to thank and congratulate everyone what has worked towards this matter, our members of Parliament, sponsors, labourers , our representatives to UNESCO.” Comments of Charles Peter Mayiga Buganda’s premier upon receiving the news.
The works of renovating the Kasubi Tombs to their standards are estimated beyond 10 billion Uganda shillings and these have come from different sources , the ettofaali campaign by the Katiikiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga, Central government, Buganda government, UNESCO, private sector and tourists fees, who visit the site.
Colonel Tom Butime , Minister of Tourism, wildlife and Antiquities attributed the pass to collective work from all stake holders and further testified that this will not only boost local tourism but also create employment for people around the site as well reignite cultural pride and restore heritage among the Baganda
