Politics is commonly known to be a national aspect where people go to polls to select their leaders , however politics is the science or art of governing society with the aim to influence decisions and change people’s welfare in a given society.
Universities are the highest institutions of learning in a given country where students go to acquire professional and career courses. Like other institutions, universities have leadership from top administration to the students Guild council. The guild council is at the helm of this leadership and the guild president is the top leader among students.
The president is usually appointed with other few positions like guild secretary, speaker and vice president. The rest of the ministers are elected by the guild president and sworn in to serve in the guild council.
The processes of electing a guild president is more like what happens at the national level while electing the president, the difference is that at national level the president is national and Supreme, while at the University the guild president is institutional and supervised by the guild administration.
university politics involved candidates competing in different national political parties and affiliations. Through this system many leaders at national level have been molded by their respective parties and later precast for different posts at national politics level. However this politics has been schemed to change recently.
Majority of the Universities across the country have changed the way students compete and they are no longer allowed to compete through political parties or affiliations. Universities allege that influence from external political parties have rundown university politics over the years as they have shifted from causing strikes and demonstrations in universities to influencing peer groups that vandalize property worth millions of money in university premises which leads to losses. In worse situations, students have been known to lose their lives through engaging in fights between supporters of opposing political parties.

It’s on these grounds that Universities have banned competition with influence from national parties and if found, one is discontinued from the race. This has manifested so much in the recent times as universities claim that this kind of politics is not a sustainable solution to students demonstration. However very many stake holders think that this is a step in the wrong direction as it will damage our political systems and multiparty dispensation. Many leaders especially from the activism wing and scholars of political science say there’s a better way to solve hooliganism that comes with competing in political parties rather than banning them completely.
