University Students’ Program pushes for  Inter- University Debates .

The Center for Constitutional Governance (CCG) Hope Initiative University Students’ Program season four was launched at Skyz Hotel Naguru on 17th July , 2024  . Under the theme “ The role of Students in promoting constitutionalism .”

The students and youth program in higher Institutions of learning mainly universities is designed to engage students in critical thinking , debate and discussion about constitutional principles and being part of Uganda’s governing process , at a national , regional , political and social communities .

“ Through Civic engagement , we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the constitution , it’s historical context , it’s relevance in addressing current and future challenges .

Inter University debates are a way of promoting constitutionalism among youth .” said  Dr. Sarah Bireete the Executive Director of CCG .

Dr. Sarah urged young people to be well versed in principles of constitutionalism especially in today’s rapidly changing world ,  where dynamics of governance and societal norms are consistently evolving .

With a critical mass of knowledgeable citizens that can defend , promote and give importance to the Constitution ; a belief in

the constitution by political actors , constitutionalism can thrive. Noted Dr. Sarah .

Students’ confidence has been boosted through the previous seasons with over 200 participants. This year’s program is scheduled to run in 25 universities across Uganda .

Youth parliament  members , District councilors , Youth council leaders and leaders in civil organizations have evolved from CCG  through mentorship and trainings .

Hon . Chris Baryomunsi the cabinet mister  for Information , communication Technology and National guidance officiated the event . He emphasized the need to  translate the constitution to all

languages in Uganda and made as  popular as the English version .

Universities play a fundamental role in shaping the future leaders and policy makers , therefore Prof. Mwambustya  Ndebesa cautioned  students to be independent and intellectual thinkers not allowing anyone think for them .

Students look forward to the  CCG Hope Initiative program because they are challenged to vacate their comfortable zone in critical thinking with deeper understanding of the constitution and the rule of law .
