My Journey as an Adult Learner has been one of determination, resilience, and continuous personal growth. Like many professionals, I have always believed that education is a lifelong journey rather than a destination. Every stage of learning has shaped my career, strengthened my passion for teaching, and inspired me to embrace new opportunities.

As an educator, I have always encouraged others to pursue knowledge regardless of age or circumstance. Eventually, I found myself walking the same path I had often recommended to my students and fellow teachers. This experience has taught me that learning never truly ends.

A Dream That Began at Makerere University

In 2022, I proudly secured admission to Makerere University to pursue a Bachelor of Education (Primary). Studying at one of Uganda’s oldest and most respected universities was a dream come true. I was excited to improve my professional knowledge and become a better educator.

However, as the semester progressed, reality set in. Balancing full-time employment with university studies became increasingly difficult. Daily lectures, assignments, coursework, examinations, and professional responsibilities demanded more time than I could comfortably manage.

Like many adult learners, I discovered that returning to university requires excellent time management, discipline, and sacrifice.


Discovering a New Opportunity

Everything changed when I came across a message in a WhatsApp group introducing a flexible education programme designed specifically for working teachers.

The programme offered flexible tuition payment plans and a study schedule that accommodated professionals who could not attend regular daytime classes.

Interested in learning more, I contacted Mr. Mbehuzya Bernard, who patiently explained the admission process. With additional guidance from Dr. Kabeera Pintian, I successfully enrolled in the In-Service Bachelor of Education Programme at Victoria University Uganda.

This decision marked a turning point in My Journey as an Adult Learner.


Building a Learning Community

When I joined the programme, I was the only admitted student.

Rather than remaining alone, I reached out to fellow teachers and education professionals, encouraging them to consider the opportunity.

Through networking and sharing information, our numbers steadily increased.

By orientation day, nearly seventy students had enrolled under different admission schemes.

Watching the programme grow from one student to a vibrant learning community remains one of the most rewarding experiences of my academic journey.


Learning Beyond the Traditional Classroom

Orientation introduced many of us to modern educational technologies.

Some students had limited computer experience, while others had never participated in online learning before.

Fortunately, the university provided guidance that enabled everyone to develop basic ICT skills.

Within a short time, students became confident using computers, online learning platforms, digital libraries, and virtual classrooms.

Technology transformed our learning experience.

Instead of viewing computers as obstacles, we began to see them as essential learning tools.

Our homes gradually became classrooms, allowing us to attend lectures, submit assignments, participate in discussions, and complete assessments without interrupting our professional responsibilities.

This flexible approach reflects the growing importance of technology in higher education.

Academic Challenges That Strengthened Me

Although examinations were conducted online and often followed an open-book format, success was never guaranteed.

Many people mistakenly assume that open-book examinations are easier.

In reality, they require critical thinking, proper preparation, research skills, and the ability to apply knowledge rather than simply memorising information.

Assignments demanded independent thinking, teamwork, and continuous reading.

Balancing deadlines with professional duties often meant studying late into the night or dedicating weekends to academic work.

Despite these challenges, every completed assignment and successful examination strengthened my confidence as both a student and an educator.


Lessons from My Journey as an Adult Learner

Looking back, this journey has taught me valuable lessons.

First, learning has no age limit.

Second, technology is no longer optional in education—it is essential.

Third, networking creates opportunities that many people never discover on their own.

Finally, perseverance remains one of the greatest qualities any adult learner can possess.

Education is not only about earning qualifications.

It is about developing the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and confidence needed to contribute positively to society.
